Hi All!
I hope your week is going well so far. As always, I wanted to send you my weekly tips & tricks to stay on top of your goals. This week’s emphasis is on learning new skills. I hope you enjoy it.
1. “To be successful, you have to develop certain traits such as courage, dignity, charisma and integrity. You also have to recognize that you have to work harder on yourself than on your job. You attract success because of the person you are.” — Jim Rohn
This week, I received a memorable compliment from someone at my work. It made my day. In a conversation about my targets for the upcoming year, he told me, “You know, what I like about you is that you have integrity. You’re honest and when you make a promise, you stick to it.”
Afterwards, I was thinking to myself, “How does someone become that way? Surely I am not the only person on earth who has integrity.” After some digging on the web, I came across the above quote. I think it answered my question quite well…
2. “Success has to do with deliberate practice. Practice must be focused, determined, and in an environment where there’s feedback.” — Malcolm Gladwell
One of the fastest ways to learn a new skill is through deliberate practice. It is all about getting better at something you currently can’t do well. Unlike regular practice, which typically includes mindless repetitions, deliberate practice requires focus and is conducted with a goal in mind. It’s a surefire way to learn something new—that is, if you practice consistently.
3. “When you find yourself reading so quickly that you no longer get what’s being said, it’s time to slow down. After all, what’s a book if you don’t understand it?” — Mike van der Poel
I’ve been receiving a lot of advertisements on speed reading courses. To me, that’s a little scary. It’s almost like they know I like to read slowly?
Tired of seeing claims that promise they can double or triple my reading speed, I decided to do some research. You can find my findings in this week’s article, “Is Speed Reading a Myth? Or Does It Really Work?“
Until next week,
Mike van der Poel
